Spell Jar: How to Create Your Own Spell Jars

A spell jar, simply put, is a physical representation of our intentions. They are similar to normal spells in that we gather a handful of ingredients that represent what we are trying to achieve then use them to communicate our intentions to the universe.

Instead of just having the physical elements of our spells just being on our altars we can put them in a jar. This means they will continue to radiate our intentions long after we’ve finished the spell. We can even make small spell jars to keep in our pockets or large ones to bury in the ground in significant places.

In folk magic spell jars were mainly used for protection and hidden around wherever the magic was needed. Sometimes spell jars were even used to curse or hex people.

Around Samhain or Halloween in North America people would create witch jars to ward of evil spirits. These often included things such as nails, pins and sharp objects as well as the urine of the homeowner to tie the protection to them.

As we’re always saying its your intention that is the most important thing in witchcraft. You can make a spell jar for any reason, with any ingredients and as long as it has meaning to you it will work.

You can look for spell jar recipes online or get creative and make up your own. The only limit is your imagination.

Spell Jar Containers

You don’t need anything fancy to make a spell jar. In fact some old jars you have lying around the house may be even better than a purpose built jar.

For example if you want to make a love spell jar to draw the affections of your soul mate using an old honey jar would be perfect. The sweetness of the honey symbolizes the sweetness of true love.

Spell Jars can be as pretty or ugly as you like. If you want to decorate the jar to make it attractive to look at then no one will even know what its real purpose is.

You might like to paint the jar or use colored ribbon in a color that is connected with your spell for example with a love spell jar you might like to use a red ribbon.

Spell Jar Ingredients

You can create a spell jar in the same way you create a normal spell. Look up the meanings of herbs, crystals and oils and select some that fit your purpose. You might even like to create a sigil to draw on the outside of the jar.

Spell Jar Ritual

Sometimes its nice to make the creation of a new spell jar into a ritual. Start as always by casting a circle. Begin by invoking the elements. Next light a candle in a color that is relevant to your spell jar then place your elements into the jar. You might like to say out loud which each item represents as you place it in.

Write down your intention in the present tense for example “I am in love.” Place this intention on a small piece of paper inside the jar. When your jar is full use the wax from the candle to seal it. Close your circle and you have successfully created a spell jar!

Feel free to experiment with different intentions and spells. Just do what feels right to you.
