Candle Magic

What is Candle Magic?

Candles are used in spells by all different kinds of witches. Candles are great because they represent one of each of the four elements:

Air: Oxygen feeds the flame and air causes it to flicker.

Earth: The candle is made up of solid wax.

Water: When the wax melts it represents the fluidity of water.

Fire: The flame of the candle burns with warmth and light.

Candle magic can be used for any purpose you desire with certain colors lending themselves better to certain desired outcomes.

How to Charge a Candle

Charging a candle means to imprint your intent upon a candle. Before or during a ritual a candle can be charged by carving your intent into it.

You can do this by heating up a small knife of needle and writing your intent on to the candle. Some examples of intention may be “My friend will be healed” or “My children will be safe”.

You can add even more to your ritual by dressing your candle with an appropriate oil or placing it with crystals that will magnify your intention. You can even use special herbs that have similar properties to the color of candle you are using.

How to Perform a Candle Magic Ritual

Here is step by step guide to a candle ritual you may like to follow if it’s your first time. Don’t worry about getting it perfect. As long as it has meaning to you it will work. Remember intention is the key to everything in witchcraft.

You will need:

– A candle of your selected colour
– An altar or safe place to perform the ritual
– Any oils, herbs or crystals you might like to use
– A wand
– A small knife or needle
– Incense or sage

Set up

Set up your altar in a configuration that is appropriate for your ritual. Choose a candle that is useful color for your goal. You might like to add crystals, herbs or oils that are relevant to your spell. For example if you want to help quiet your anxiety take a light blue candle and place it safely in a candle holder. You could surround the candle with amethyst, a crystal known to help combat anxiety. You could also have some lavender oil on the altar to anoint the candle during your ritual.

Before you begin take your incense or sage, light it and wave its smoke over your altar and in the area you will perform the ritual in. This will cleanse your items and your space and prepare them for the ritual.

Begin

Start by taking a deep breath and clearing your mind of any of the days worries. When you are ready take your wand and draw a protective circle around yourself. This will protect you from any negative energies that may want to interfere with your spell.

Next ask the earth, the air, the wind, the fire to hear your call. If you have your altar set up with something representing each of these elements you may like to refer to them during the ritual. You could also draw the shape of a pentacle in your protective circle over your altar, naming the elements in each corner.

Next take your small knife or needle and carve your intention into the candle. For our anxiety example you might write something like “I will be calm, I won’t worry for no reason”.

Next anoint your candle by dripping a small amount of oil down it.

When you are ready light the candle. Leave it burning until it burns out on its own.
You might like to sit with the candle and meditate while it burns down. If you want to go do other things and come back first cut a doorway in your protective circle with your wand by moving it from the edge of the circle, up, to the side, then down again. Close the doorway behind you when you leave then open it again to reenter your circle.

We don’t recommend leaving the room of the ritual while a candle is burning for safety reasons.

Ending the Ritual

When the candle has burnt out take your wand and draw a circle in the opposite direction to which you drew it the first time. This will release the energy built up by your ritual out into the world. You may like to finish by saying something like “so mote it be”.

Where to Get Candles?

You can use any candles you have lying around. They don’t need to be special. You can even use birthday candles for a quick spell as it will only take a matter of minutes for the candle to burn down.

If you do want to splash out and get some special built for purpose candles we recommend buying a multipack with a whole lot of different colours to choose from for different spells.

We recommend this bulk pack of 40 candles by Govinda. This will be a great kit to get you started. You can experiment with all different colours and really get a feel for what works for you. (Affiliate link, we may earn a commission if you purchase.)
